Getting up from the floor sounds like a simple task—until it isn’t.

As we age, it becomes increasingly difficult for many people due to factors like decreased muscle mass, reduced joint flexibility, and common issues such as arthritis. These changes can significantly weaken the leg and core muscles that are essential for this basic movement.

If you’re finding yourself out of breath, your joints are aching, or the whole thing feels clunky and uncoordinated—it’s time to practice. This is a skill, and like any skill, it can improve with focused effort. One of the most effective movements for regaining this ability is the technical stand.

Enter the Technical Stand

This movement may look simple, but it’s incredibly powerful. It trains your body to move more efficiently, improves coordination, and strengthens the exact muscles needed to rise from the ground with confidence and control.

At PROATHLON, the technical stand is part of our warm-up routine during this cycle of small group personal training sessions. We’ve made it a priority because we want our members zipping up and down off the floor like toddlers by the end of the six-week cycle.

Not a Member? You Can Still Practice

If you’re not currently training with us, don’t worry—you can still follow along. Use the tutorial above and start incorporating this move into your routine. It might feel awkward at first, but with consistency, it gets easier.

And remember: if we don’t use it, we lose it. The ability to get up and down off the floor is more than a fitness goal—it’s a key indicator of longevity, independence, and quality of life.
